Father charges adult daughter rent but she claims it's 'theft' — here is how to navigate the transition to independent living

Twenty-somethings living at home is an increasingly common reality in North America, but the arrangement can become emotionally and financially volatile when expectations aren't aligned. One father recently reached out to The Ramsey Show to share a scenario that has left his family in turmoil: he decided to charge his adult daughter a modest rent to teach responsibility, and she responded by accusing him of "stealing" from her (1).

A daughter's backlash over rent

The caller explained that his daughter, who is in her early 20s, has been a registered nurse for a few years and is currently...

Personal Loans

When an urgent home repair can't wait, Canadians locked into low fixed-rate mortgages may find a personal loan is faster — and cheaper

Whether you live in Winnipeg and your furnace gives out, or you’re braving spring showers in Ontario with a leaky roof, there’s one thing all homeowners have in common: your home emergency doesn’t care that you’re locked into a mortgage.

For most Canadian homeowners, when a big-ticket repair pops up, the instinct is to tap our home equity — either a mortgage refinance or getting a home equity line of credit (HELOC). Both options solve the dilemma of how to...

Canada's Retirement Wealth Pyramid

Are you near the top or bottom of Canada's retirement wealth pyramid — and does it even matter?

If you're mapping out your retirement, you probably have a number in your head. As of 2026, most Canadians believe they’ll need an average of $1.7 million to retire comfortably — up from $1.54 million the year before — according to the latest annual retirement survey by BMO Financial Group (1). Yet more than 1 in 3 say they're unlikely to ever hit that target (2).

But here's the more unsettling truth: When you compare that goal to what Canadian senior households actually have, the gap between...

Bank of Canada maintains policy rate at 2¼%

The Bank of Canada today held its target for the overnight rate at 2.25%, with the Bank Rate at 2.5% and the deposit rate at 2.20%.

The war in the Middle East has increased volatility in global energy prices and financial markets, and heightened the risks to the global economy. The breadth and duration of the conflict, and hence its economic impacts, are highly uncertain.

Prior to the war, the global economy was on pace to grow at around 3%, as expected in the January Monetary Policy Report (MPR). Economic growth in the United States has moderated but remains solid, driven by consumption...

If digital payments go dark, you could be left with nothing. Here's how much cash to keep at home — and what else to own

As geopolitical tensions rise and digital payments underpin nearly every transaction Canadians make, a warning from one of the world’s most cashless countries may hit closer to home.

In early March 2026, Sweden’s central bank, the Riksbank, urged households to keep enough physical cash at home to cover at least one week of essential purchases, including food and medicine (1). The advice may sound surprising coming from Sweden — a country where roughly nine in 10 purchases are made digitally (2). But Canada is moving along a similar path toward a largely cashless economy.

The Riksbank said...

Uptick in GTA Home Sales Expected in Second Half of Year

Greater Toronto Area (GTA) resale housing market conditions tightened in February 2026 compared to February 2025. While sales were down year-over-year, new listings declined by a greater annual rate. The dip in new listings is in line with recent polling results from Ipsos which show listing intentions are down for 2026.

“Many would-be homebuyers are waiting for selling prices to level off before moving into the market. If new listings continue to trend lower through the spring, competition between homebuyers will increase, supporting home prices and a recovery in sales,” said TRREB...

Understanding the basics of rental agreements

Every province and territory has already done the heavy lifting of what’s legal, and what’s not, in rental agreements. Your job is to learn about it.

Tenancy laws vary by province, and educational resources are easily accessible online for renters to learn about their rights and the basics of a typical rental agreement. If you’re moving out-of-province for school or a new job, you’ll need to look up local laws.

In British Columbia, for example, the Residential Tenancy Branch (RTB) governs the tenant-landlord relationship, said Arash Ehteshami, a tenancy lawyer with Bright Law in...
